When we think about the $7.5 billion in federal investments in charging infrastructure for #electricvehicles, the NEVI formula program for states gets most of the attention. But just as exciting is the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program that offers communities the chance to leverage federal funds to get EV-ready.Communities can take this transformative #environmentaljustice opportunity to think not just about high-profile DC fast charging to but how a well developed Level 2 charging ecosystem could provide #EV charging options for residents and workers at a relatively low cost. Imagine your community blanketed with convenient charging available for everyone!

Theprevious round of CFI funding, released in January 2024, benefited 47 projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico, supporting construction of approximately 7,500 EV charging ports, but the FHWA received applications for 6x the amount of funding available. Today’s announcement reserves more than $520 million for some unselected first-round applicants who may be reconsidered for the current round of funding. FHWA will contact unselected round 1 applicants directly about this opportunity. We talk about access and decreasing range anxiety frequently. Ensuring that stations are operational when drivers pull up is critical if we want to support the transition. Previous reliability fundingawarded approximately $148.8 million in grant funding to 24 applicants to repair or replace broken or non-operational electric vehicle charging ports in 20 States and were awarded to 14 State Departments of Transportation and 10 local entities.Let's look at the breakdown --The CFI Program is divided into two distinct grant funding categories and requires that 50% of the funding over five years is made available for both Communities and Corridors:1. Community Charging and Fueling Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities.2. Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants: This program will strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure along designated AFCs.The Good News: In CFI Round 2, up to $800 million will be available for new applications (due August 28, 2024). Graham Evans' panel discussion at #CERAWeek 2024, highlighted the progress and challenges of EV charging infrastructure. Key points include:- EVgo's charger utilization has tripled from 6% to 19% over two years, with Texas and Florida showing significant growth.- Public charging satisfaction hinges on the ease of finding chargers, stall availability, charging speed, and simplified payment methods, such as automatic vehicle and owner identification.- Microgrids with vehicle energy storage are becoming popular in bus fleets due to predictable demand.- The demand for grid equipment is surging, causing 5-10 year lead times for some components, indicating a future need for substation and transmission line upgrades.Experts like Tam Osentowski from Schneider Electric, Lionel Chailleux from Hitachi Electric, and Badar Khan from EVGo contributed to the discussion. A recent report by Xendee and Endeavor Business Media found that while electric vehicle adoption is accelerating, the current grid infrastructure struggles to handle the increasing demand.According to the report, 75% of survey respondents identified grid limitations as a critical obstacle to deploying EV charging stations. However, there is a clear consensus on the solution: microgrids powered by distributed energy resources. Nearly 80% of respondents believe microgrids are the game-changing technology needed to support the transition from internal combustion engines to electric fleets. The path to widespread EV adoption requires innovative solutions to overcome grid limitations. Microgrids offer a promising way forward, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy distribution for the future of e-mobility.#ElectricFleets #EV #Microgrids #ConstructionIndustry
