What started as a small cough turned into a life-changing discovery for Bernadette Lemke. During a routine wellness visit, her primary care clinician, Philip Benyo, PA-C, with LVPG Geriatric and Internal Medicine–Brookhill Plaza in Sugarloaf, ordered a chest X-ray – and it’s a good thing he did. The scan revealed lung cancer, but because it was caught early, Bernadette was able to undergo surgery and avoid chemotherapy or radiation. 💪After a successful surgery with Richard Chang, MD, lung cancer surgeon and Chief of Thoracic Surgery with Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence at LVH–Cedar Crest, Bernadette received top-notch care from a compassionate team of doctors and nurses at LVHN. “Every doctor I encountered cared about me deeply as a patient,” she recalls. “The nurses in the hospital were great. They were very proactive and with me for the whole time.”Now cancer-free, Bernadette is back on the golf course, shooting a solid 51 for nine holes! ⛳ Her story is a testament to the importance of wellness exams and trusting the care team right here in her community.Benyo says, “This is a great example of the value of an annual wellness visit.” Because of that one appointment, Bernadette can continue doing what she loves. 💚🏌️♀️Curious how Bernadette’s care team helped her overcome this challenge and get back to doing what she loves? Read her full story and see how early detection made all the difference. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3XSLE7H

Nurses who care for patients at the end of life take the art of nursing to another level. Hospice nurse and Friends of Nursing Award recipient Jackie Ludwig is a prime example. Her colleague writes, “Jackie is the light on some of our patients’ darkest days.” Her ability to build relationships is exceptionally unique because she has the compassion, empathy, and emotional strength to care for all patients and families – even the very young. This October, as we recognize Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, we honor the caregivers like Jackie who offer unwavering support to grieving families facing the unimaginable loss of a child. Their role is not only vital but truly extraordinary. #PregnancyAndInfantLossAwareness

🏅💙 SIX-TIME CERTIFIED! 💙🏅We’re proud to share that Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute has earned its sixth consecutive certification from The Joint Commission for our LVAD program. This means we’re leading the way in providing top-notch care for patients who need a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to support heart health.A complex, open-heart procedure, implanting an LVAD – a mechanical pump that helps the lower left chamber pump blood – is undertaken only by highly skilled cardiac thoracic surgeons like Timothy Misselbeck, MD, Section Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support with Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Misselbeck is one of only two surgeons performing around 10 LVAD procedures each year at our Institute. 💪💙From our surgeons to nurses to rehabilitation specialists, our whole team is dedicated to giving patients the best possible outcomes.“The Joint Commission process is a good validation of our system and what we’re trying to achieve for our patients,” says Dr. Misselbeck. 👏✨ Learn more about our comprehensive heart care and what makes LVHN a top choice for advanced heart procedures: https://bit.ly/3TN2Kmd
